Meet our team

BASS HIVE was founded by local female DJ, MIELE, in response to several gaps within the music industry:

  • Access to affordable practice spaces with club-standard DJ equipment is limited

  • Professional DJ setups are expensive, making home studios inaccessible for many aspiring artists

  • DJ education is often delivered through generic, one-size-fits-all programs that don’t suit individual learning styles

  • Many DJ courses are created without strong foundations in teaching or pedagogy

  • Emerging DJs are often left without guidance on how to transition from learning the basics to becoming active in the music scene

  • Women and underrepresented communities continue to face additional barriers within electronic music culture

  • For many women and queer artists, learning in traditionally male-dominated environments can feel intimidating or unwelcoming

BASS HIVE aims to counteract these issues in the industry by providing a safe space for anyone to learn and grow in their music journey. We value community, creativity and inclusivity above all and will provide an affordable way for DJs to learn and experience club standard equipment. Our basic syllabus outline has been designed by a qualified teacher and will be adapted to suit you as a learner and an individual to meet you at your experience and comfort level.

Mel (MIELE)

Owner, Founder & DJ Instructor

With over a decade behind the decks, Mel has built an international DJ career performing across clubs, bars, festivals, and events in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. As a house music producer with a deep love for electronic music, she brings both technical skill and creative energy to everything she does.

Alongside her music career, Mel has 13+ years working as a school teacher and has trained emerging DJs through the Your Shot Auckland competitions, developing a reputation for her clear, engaging, and empowering teaching style.

Driven by a vision to merge music and education, Mel founded BASS HIVE—a space where creativity, confidence, and community come together to help the next generation of DJs find their sound.

"After experiencing firsthand the barriers faced by women and underrepresented communities in the electronic music scene, I want to create meaningful change. My mission is to build an inclusive community and provide a safe, supportive space where diverse artists can develop their skills, grow in confidence, and take their place in the industry. Let's shape a more representative and vibrant future for electronic music together"

KOVACS

DJ & DJ instructor

A man of many faces, Kovacs is a sought-after wedding and event DJ in Auckland, while his alter ego, Who Really Cares, brings high energy, bass heavy UKG to festival stages across Australia and New Zealand.

With the better part of a decade behind the decks, Kovacs combines technical precision with undeniable stage presence, delivering performances that connect, elevate, and move a crowd.

His DJ lessons go beyond the basics. Ask anyone he taught in the Your Shot competitions, his lessons are next level. It's all about stepping into your identity as an artist—building confidence, refining your sound, and learning how to truly own the stage.
